"In this course, students will be learning individual words and sentence starters that will help them express their ideas and feelings confidently. This course will also furnish students a brief instructional trail in phonics that will be useful for them in learning how to read and write, and in understanding when, how, and why they can use phonics.
WEEK 1 – 4: INTRODUCTION TO WORD FAMILIES
During the first four weeks of the course, students will be learning different word families (group of words that have a common feature) through videos, listening exercises and reading activities. These are wonderful tools for students to practice spelling.
Unit 1: Recognizing and sounding out words that rhyme with /-at/, /-am/, /-an/,
/-ad/, /-ap/ and /-ag/.
Unit 2: Recognizing and sounding out words that rhyme with /-et/, /-en/ and /-ed/.
Unit 3: Recognizing and sounding out words that rhyme with /-ig/, /-it/, /-ip/, /-id/ and /-in/.
Unit 4: Recognizing and sounding out words that rhyme with /-ot/, /-og/, and /-op/.
Unit 5: Recognizing and sounding out words that rhyme with /-ug/, /-ut/ and /-un/.
WEEK 5: MOST COMMON WORDS IN ENGLISH
The fifth week is building vocabulary with some of the most common words used in English. These will help students improve their conversation skills by using these words every day.

THEME OF THE PROJECT
Meet the Word Families At the end of this course project, students will be able to create a word family chart with the whole class which will help them build phonemic awareness. Every lesson, students will be asked to think of words from a certain word family. They will also be asked to use these words in sentences to assure comprehension. Then they will be asked to choose a word from the list and then draw pictures to illustrate them. Lastly, students’ work will be put together to create the Word Family Chart.
