Weeks 9-12: Writing the First Draft

Writing a strong topic sentence
Varying sentence structure: sentence with object VS sentence with complement
Connecting ideas in compound sentences
Using pronouns for paragraph cohesion


Weeks 13-16: Writing the Second Draft

Punctuation: comma rules
Improving writing style with synonyms
Adding visual aids

Purpose

By the end of this project, the students will be able to:

Identify the features of good writing
Classify texts by genge
Identify examples of genre-specific features in real world texts
Give written instructions using command sentences and modal verbs
Arrange written instructions in logical order
Maintain the variety in writing by using multiple sentence types
Communicate precisely by selecting appropriate synonyms
Write cohesive how-to paragraphs
Use visual aids to help communicate the main points of writing
Format an electronic text

1ST STAGE OF THE PROJECT

A Brief Guide to Writing



Students collaborate on an interactive guide to good writing that will be used as a reference throughout the entire project.

2ND STAGE OF THE PROJECT

A Brief Guide to All



Students find and share examples of informative (instructional) writing from the web, including recipes, tutorials, guidelines, etc. Then they find the features of informative writing from weeks 5-8 in samples posted by peers.

3RD STAGE OF THE PROJECT

A Brief Guide to … (First Draft)



Students submit the first draft of a how-to paragraph teaching how to perform an action of their choice. The draft is submitted on a discussion board, and the submission is followed by a peer discussion.

4TH STAGE OF THE PROJECT

A Brief Guide to … (Second Draft)



Students submit the second draft of the how-to paragraph. The submission is posted in a collaborative document, and by the end of this project, the class will have created a brief guidebook of practical skills.
